After a successful pilot, Ohio State is preparing to implement a new requirement related to university travel. Starting July 1, all business-related flights and car rentals must be booked through Ohio State’s travel partners.
This initiative is one of three “quick wins” designed to maximize use of university contracts to improve operational efficiency and service to the Ohio State community.
Universal use of our travel partners will have both immediate and long-term benefits that support the Operational Excellence and Resource Stewardship pillar of the strategic plan. Benefits include:
- Discounted rates: Our negotiated discounts for flights and vehicle rentals can provide immediate savings, and these will only grow as more university travelers make use of our contracts.
- Assistance to travelers: The university can provide more support when our travelers are affected by emergencies. This duty of care is essential.
- Partnership opportunities: By better harnessing our buying power, the university can negotiate additional benefits for travelers and revenue opportunities (funding for scholarships, student assistance, research, etc.) to support the university’s mission.
An announcement about the travel requirement will be distributed broadly prior to launch. The Ohio State Travel Office website contains detailed information and resources about university travel.
Other efficiency initiatives

The university is completing work on two other efficiency initiatives to make better use of university contracts.
- New furniture purchases: The university intends to consolidate purchases of new furniture with a single supplier/distributor that will yield both savings and new support for strategic priorities. The new contract, when complete, will ensure quality furniture, discounted pricing and high service levels. An RFP has been completed and the university is negotiating a contract.
- Office computer standardization: Ohio State will be establishing standard configurations for most office computers that will provide both upfront discounts and savings on maintenance and repair. Users will still be able to choose from Apple or PC options, and an exception process will allow for specialized needs.
More information will be forthcoming as these initiatives are finalized.
