Discover Hidden (and Free) Treasures at Campus Surplus

If elevating or furnishing your office space is on your 2024 “to-do” list, Campus Surplus may be a sustainable and cost-effective solution. By choosing to reuse items, you not only reduce your ecological footprint but also contribute to creating a campus culture that values resourcefulness, community and responsible stewardship.

Why Choose Campus Surplus?

The U.S. EPA estimates, up to 17 billion pounds of office assets end up in U.S. landfills annually. Reusing office furnishings instead of purchasing new ones reduces the demand for timber, metals, plastics and fabrics, eliminates carbon emissions from manufacturing and transporting new products and keeps functional items out of landfills.

What Types of Items Can I Find at Campus Surplus?

Surplus inventory is always changing, but common items include desks, tables, bookshelves, office chairs, seating, framed artwork, computer monitors, filing cabinets and more.

How To Browse and Claim Free Office Furnishings

Transfer Days are held on the first working Monday of each month. The next Transfer Day is Monday, Feb. 5, 2024. University staff can visit Campus Surplus on Transfer Days from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to browse the ever-changing inventory and tag items that will be used in on-campus workspaces. Staff have until noon on Friday of that week to pick up their items. Campus Surplus is located at 2650 Kenny Road toward the rear of the building, between Stores & Receiving and Central Production Kitchen (CPK).

To take your items from Surplus, you’ll need to create a Buckeye Buy Requisition in Workday. Instructions are on the Surplus website under the “Our Services” heading under “Department Transfer.”

If you cannot transport items to your workspace, Surplus provides a fee-based delivery service, which can be added to your order in Workday by entering “Surplus” in the search bar for Goods and Services.

Making Campus Surplus your first stop when shopping for office furnishings will help stretch your budget further, reduce waste and help extend the lifespan of university resources. Choosing Campus Surplus promotes a sustainable cycle that benefits both your department and the environment.
